Popis: A graft copolymer of high-density polyethylene and acrylic acid was prepared by pre-irradiation activation of the polyethylene. The properties of an 8% acrylic acid copolymer were compared to the parent polyethylene and polyacrylic acid over a range of temperatures. Most properties measured exhibit the type of behavior expected for this type of structure. In general, the property trends observed in high-density polyethylene are retained in the graft copolymer. The greatest physical property change is observed as an increase in tensile modulus of about The adhesiveness of the graft copolymer is greatly improved over that of polyethylene, but very little charge is noted in the moisture sensitivity or crystallinity. The data also suggest that the introduction of the acid group introduces sites for hydrogen bonding or for further chemical reactions.
