Popis: | Until recently, dermatologists have received little or no training about cosmetic products, including moisturizers. Clinical reports of individual patient reactions to ingredients in moisturizers or the moisturizers themselves can result in an exaggerated view of potential reactions to these products. Skin reactions to moisturizers include allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), irritant contact dermatitis (ICD), and acneiform eruptions, yet the frequency of reactions is rare. The classic definitions of moisturizer and humectant are reviewed and analyzed in light of current oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsion technology. Current research in consumer product company laboratories should result in better and more useful moisturizers. This paper concludes citing the two most important aspects of a successful moisturizer from a dermatologist's perspective: one that truly works on dry skin and does not sting. |
