Popis: | An experimental setup is presented, which consists of a laser vaporization cluster source, various ion optics for ion guidance, a quadrupole mass filter for mass selection, a ring electrode ion trap for ion storage and a reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer for the analysis of the products for ion-molecule reactions. An electronic device to control the ion trap is introduced, which allows for the storage of molecules in a mass range of 200 u to over 17,000 u at temperature ranging from 20 K to 320 K. The storage of ions in this mass range was achieved by the utilization of square-wave RF-voltages of variable frequencies and an external offset of DC-voltages. While the first allows for the operation of the trap with low amplitudes of the RF-voltages, the DC-offset can be applied to each electrode separately, which enables the controlled extraction of ions by different voltage settings. By using tantalum cluster cations of various masses, the storage and extraction properties of the trap are demonstrated and it is shown that the combination of a ring electrode trap with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer enables simultaneous detection of different reaction products in ion-molecule reactions with high sensitivity. |
