Popis: Conducting studies online provides a number of advantages for infant research. Besides saving researchers and participants time and costs, the experimental protocols of online studies – the code, materials and instructions – can easily be shared, facilitating replicability and collaboration between labs. ManyBabies-AtHome (MBAH) is an independent project within the ManyBabies consortium that aims to develop a testing framework for online infant research that can be used globally. One of the challenges of replicating language acquisition studies internationally is choosing verbal stimuli that can be used across languages. For example, in a looking-while-listening procedure (Fernald et al., 2008), target words are typically presented in a sentence frame, also called the carrier phrase. Because of cross-linguistic differences (i.e. word order and grammatical gender) choosing a specific carrier phrase that can be used in all languages is difficult. Therefore, presenting words in isolation may be a solution. However, previous research has suggested that presenting words in a carrier phrase facilitates word comprehension in lab experiments (Fernald & Hurtado, 2006). Thus, presenting words in isolation might hinder word comprehension. However, it is not clear if this also applies to online studies. In this online study, we will investigate whether children comprehend words better when presented in a carrier phrase, in isolation or preceded by an article.
