Popis: | If healthy ageing is the key to longevity, as we proposed in the first article of this series, then we suggest that one must recognise that this is a lifelong process beginning from conception, and is influenced by early life and other events that offer windows of opportunity to influence health outcomes later in life; this is a concept that we will refer to as a life course perspective. Healthy ageing also requires us to embrace whole organism thinking in clinical practice and future research on ageing, recognising that all health care decisions involve trade-offs and can be both good and bad for an individual dog. The concept of compression of morbidity suggests that if the onset of chronic illness could be postponed, this would reduce the lifetime burden of illness and would contribute to a longer healthspan. The economic benefits of slower aging, and reduction in the associated health care costs, are encompassed by the concept of the longevity dividend. |
