| Popis: | “With the recent manifestation of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome, AIDS, society is being confronted for the first time since the polio epidemic of the 1950s with a serious infectious disease of epidemic proportions, to which medical science as yet has no answer ..... All the available information currently points ..... in the direction of a particularly serious development involving not just large-scale human suffering but also enormous costs” (Dutch Lower House, 1985). It was with these introductory remarks that State Secretary Van der Reijden submitted the first government memorandum on AIDS to the Lower House of Parliament on 20 September 1985. At that point a cumulative total of 66 people with AIDS had been notified to the Chief Medical Inspectorate for Public Health. |
