Popis: This chapter explores many possible sources of metadata that may already exist in the digital environment in electronic form. Each source has its own unique considerations. One of the typical sources of metadata is from enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications. ERP systems store plenty of business metadata, including financial calculations, process logic, and business rules, which are often difficult to extract, because they are buried in the mechanics of the system. Metadata is often collected as a by-product of the application, and it is usually not collected for its own intrinsic value. In order to be useful to the business community, technical metadata usually has to be translated and harvested in some way, into the language of the business, so that it can be readily understood. This chapter explores some of the ways to do this, such as extracting metadata components, resolving synonyms and homonyms, and finally stepping through the process of determining what metadata is useful to the business, how to find it in its technical form, and how to link it to where it will be helpful to users. Throughout this discussion, special attention is paid to the business metadata that is embedded in these technical sources.
