Popis:	This paper presents an account of an investigation into the teaching of mathematics to first‐year undergraduates reading for a degree in Economics at a polytechnic in the United Kingdom. The investigation was carried out over a period of three years and was conducted using a series of interviews, questionnaires and observations. The attitudes of staff and students concerning the role of mathematics in the study of economics were considered. A formative evaluation was undertaken of a teaching programme which achieved the course objectives by a combination of lectures, self‐paced study and problem‐solving activities. The major outcomes of the study are presented and some aspects which will require further investigation are identified.
