Vibrations of a solid nonuniform medium induced by a source applied to an expanding circle on the boundary

Popis: We find the unsteady displacement field in a solid elastic half space whose Lame parameter and density depend upon depth into the half space, assuming that the rate of expansion of the circle is constant. The inverse Laplace transform is evaluated using Laplace's method assuming that the degree of nonuniformity of the medium is small. Various effects caused by the nonuniformity of the medium are discussed, including the distortion of the wave fronts, the finite penetration depth of Mach waves in a nonuniform medium, and so on.
