Popis: A study of the microstructure of heavy section ductile iron influenced by different rare earth elements (La, Y, Ce) as well as commercially available FeSi alloys containing Zr, Sr, Al, Bi and Mg was made. The iron samples used (250 × 250 × 250 mm, 500 × 500 × 500 mm) were melted in an induction furnace, Mg treated in a ladle, inoculated in stream and cast into sand moulds. The graphite morphology was found to be affected by temperature, element combination as well as amount of treatment alloy that was added for treatment. A successful combination of alloys to obtain large castings without deterioration of graphite was developed.
