A bit of a departure here in this chapter, as we are not dealing with astronomical objects per se but rather various phenomena that are seen in the night sky. Some of these glows are in our Earth’s atmosphere, while others are out in the Solar System itself. Each of them is pretty amazing to see and photograph but does require special conditions and/or times of the year to see them. Several of them also require very dark skies to be seen. We’ll start with the glows in our atmosphere – aurorae, STEVE, airglow and noctilucent clouds (NLCs). Then you’ll learn about the zodiacal light, zodiacal band and gegenschein, all of which take place along the ecliptic in the Solar System and are caused by dust – yes, dust. |
