Popis: 1. Early mechanisms of defense initiated by an intracoelomic injection of bacteria were investigated in earthworms. 2. Bacteria rapidly lost their capacity to proliferate and were segregated in multicellular aggregates. 3. A system of two lectins of M r 40,000 and 45,000, synthesized by chloragocytes, seemed to be a chief mediator of antibacterial defense. 4. Certain bacteria escaped this defense by lodging in tissues which surround the coelom, especially in the longitudinal muscles of the body wall.
