Blazed gratings have been identified as potential high efficient, compact, and planar waveguide couplers. The asymmetrical continuous profile of the blazed grating allocates all diffracted light into a single order and produces higher efficiency for waveguide coupling. This asymmetrical continuous profile also brings difficulty to the fabrication process. This is particularly true when the integrated optoelectronics are down-sized and simple fabrication procedures are in demand. In this paper, a binary blazed grating coupler is proposed to facilitate the fabrication process and retain a high coupling efficiency. Computer analyses of the binary blazed grating profile and diffraction distribution are given. Design and fabrication issues of a waveguide coupler are also discussed.© (1996) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
