The determination of surfactants in a variety of samples is commercially important. The classic method for anionic and cationic surfactants is the two-phase Epton titration. The modifications currently in use are subject to many of its disadvantages: the process is time consuming; colored samples influence its accuracy; and laboratory personnel are exposed to hazardous solvents. One useful sensor material is hexadecyltrimethylammonium dodecyl sulfate, formed by the reaction of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide with sodium dodecyl sulfate. The use of flexible, tough silicone rubber matrices to disperse electrode-sensitive materials was first exploited by Pungor and Hollos-Rokosinyi. Knowledge of cationic surfactant concentrations is vital in the maintenance of product quality during commercial manufacture of detergents and the associated raw materials’ product stability over time as well as the formulation of new surfactants. Pure samples of cationic surfactants were easily titrated with sodium tetraphenylborate, but technical samples needed slow titration around the endpoint. |
