Popis: | Although cigarette smoking has declined for the U.S. adult population overall in the last 20 years, the use of smokeless tobacco products has been increasing at an alarming rate, especially among male adolescents and certain special population groups. It is estimated that there are currently more than 12 million users of smokeless tobacco in the United States (about 6 million people use smokeless tobacco weekly or more often), with 3 million of these users under 21 years of age. The evidence of health-related effects from the use of smokeless products is strongest for oral cancer. The excess risk of cancer of the cheek and gum may reach nearly 50-fold among certain groups of long-term users. |
