To determine the rate of disappearance of loose feathers, 40 assortments were placed in rows at Union Springs in 1957. Each of 20 assortments had 100 body feathers; each of 20 others, 10 feathers (2 primary and 8 body). Each row had 10 identical assortments, placed 132 feet apart. In two additional rows, 20 primaries were used, 10 to a row. Individual primary feathers were placed 132 feet apart. Birds and feathers were inspected daily for 4 successive days. In 1959, tests were conducted on two areas, one at Gadsden, Alabama, and another at Buna. One entire dead hen and combinations of loose feathers were used 1A contribution from Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, and Texas Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Project W-51-D. D. W.
