Popis: Atropa belladonna (deadly nightshade), a member of the family Solanaceae, is a rich source of tropane alkaloids, which are antimuscaric drugs and have been used for inducing sleep, as a cure for toothache, also having hallusinigenic effects. Hyoscyamine and scopolamine are the two main tropanes. Because of the pharmaceutical interest in this plant, a considerable amount of work has been done on the in vitro culture, morphogenesis, and the production of tropane alkaloids, and the subject has been recently reviewed by Bajaj and Simola (1991). Recently, genetic transformation of Atropa belladonna through Agrobacterium rhizogenes has attracted much attention to increase production of medicinal compounds (Kamada et al. 1986; Jung and Tepffer 1987).
