The Effect of Penicillin and Penicillamine on Chick Growth When Injected and When fed Orally

Popis: Elam et al. (1951) reported that growth responses in chicks were obtained by injection of penicillin which had been autoclaved in aqueous solution. They obtained no response when autoclaved penicillin was fed orally. In earlier work with penicillin, Abraham et al. (1942) found that the hydrolysis of penicillin yielded, among other products, an amino acid, penicillamine. Further study showed that all types of penicillin could be hydrolyzed into penicillamine and other products by several different methods (Imperial Industries Report, 1943; Abraham et al, 1943). From these reports it appears that the autoclaved penicillin used by Elam et al. (1951) may have decomposed with the liberation of penicillamine. The purpose of the experiments reported herein was to determine the feeding value of penicillamine.
