Acceptable waste management and the rehabilitation of a uranium mine site are vital requirements for a uranium mining and milling project to be viable (Waggitt, 2007; WNA, 2008). Extensive information is available in the literature on waste management and uranium mine and mill site rehabilitation. Consideration of the remediation and reclamation required after the shutdown of a new uranium mine and mill site begins with an understanding of the method of mining, milling and waste disposal proposed to be used, the baseline environmental conditions existing before any project commences and the current regulations. Environmental impact and mine plans at the commencement of mining projects include plans for decommissioning and rehabilitation of the site that are acceptable to the regulator and to other stakeholders. This is consistent with broadly accepted best practice in the mining industry. Such a practice will be the overall most cost-effective practice in the long term and will be the most likely to be accepted by stakeholders and to have the best chance of succeeding. |
