Poverty is a complex phenomenon and can be understood in many different ways, from the varied perspectives of material and immaterial “resources,” of “access” to institutions and markets, and of “freedoms” and “capabilities,” to mention but a few. While poverty framed as “low socioeconomic status” (low SES) draws mainly on demographic data (such as low level of education, employment status, and/or income), we have in the introduction of this book emphasized an understanding of poverty, at the same time more extended and in-depth, as an experience—an experience that both shapes people and threatens identity and integrity. |
