An athlete’s skin is susceptible to injury secondary to trauma, mechanical friction, pressure, and the environment. Lacerations refer to full-thickness disruption of the epidermis and dermis secondary to trauma. Meanwhile, friction injuries are superficial and include abrasions, chafing, and blisters. A common pressure injury such as a subungual hematoma is typically seen in long-distance runners. Environmental injuries include sunburn, frostnip, and frostbite. It is essential for a sideline provider to be knowledgeable in the diagnosis and management of skin injuries. This includes techniques for cleansing, repair, prevention, and ultimately the determination for return to play. |
