Popis: The paper examines some of the conditions that influence deviations from the ideal behavior of high temperature attack of metals, according to Wagner's model. It considers the effects of factors such as specimen shape, non-isothermal situations, alloying, multiple oxidant, volatile oxides and the effect of particulates in the gas stream. The theoretical basis exists for the description of the metal degradation by high temperature oxidation. Several systems conform quite strictly to the theory. Most real situations, where metals are exposed to high temperatures, are complex, and it is necessary in that case to take into account two or more distinct, but possibly interacting, phenomena for arriving at a valid, or adequate, description of the mechanism(s) that explain the observed, or anticipated behavior.
