Popis: | This letter comments on a previously published editorial "Exogenous hormones - boon or culprit" and includes a reply by the editorial writers. Wynder and Schneidermans proposed study is criticized because it does not include many specific problems. Possible carcinogenic hazard from hormones should be considered separately from those similar to other chemical carcinogens. Stilbestrol may induce tumors as a result of excessive hormonal activity or its action might be analogous to that of the aromatic amines or aflatoxins. In animals given stilbestrol organs not regarded as subject to estrogenic control may be associated with tumors. Given in animal food stilbestrol is regarded as a chemical carcinogen with no reference to its physiologic role. Current studies have not included the effect of oral contraceptives on the offspring of women taking the pill. Studies are considered too incomplete to justify assertions of safety. There should be consideration of all types of tumors. That the treatment of menopausal women with oral contraceptives might decrease the incidence of mammary cancer needs more intensive study. Recent reports of liver lesions associated with synthetic steroids also suggests more epidemiologic study. Wynder and Schneiderman reply that their proposed investigation was to include the effects of long-term estrogenic therapy on tumor development in all organs. It was planned to help each person make a risk/benefit evaluation. The question of "boon or culprit" of exogenous hormones is considered a public health problem. |
