The aragonite fossil corals exhibit an intense natural thermoluminescence between 300°C and 450°C. The transformation of this biogenic aragonite into calcite begins at 260°C and is completed around 450°C. It is accompanied by a rapid loss of water and a relatively important endothermic phenomenon (dehydration and phase transition). The decarbonation of the sample begins above 550°C. The skeleton of the corals studied holds water whose departure, during heating, seems to induce the aragonite-calcite transition. The latter process and the thermoluminescence phenomena observed are probably linked. |
