A cultural resource survey of five areas at Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant was carried out in 1993. The work was undertaken to identify and inventory any cultural resource properties that might be contained within the 333 ha (823 acres) that were to undergo timber harvesting. As a result of the investigations, four archeological sites and five nonsite localities were identified. Site 41 HS240 is identified as being prehistoric in age and sites 41 H5396, HS539, and HS540 date to the historic era in northeastern Harrison County, Texas. Historic sites 41 HS396 and HS540 are recommended as being ineligible for inclusion in the NRHP and no further work is required. Prehistoric site 41 HS240 and historic site HS539 are considered to retain some research potential. Therefore, it is recommended that they be considered to be of unknown eligibility for inclusion in the NRHP and that additional data be collected to complete the evaluation for their NRHP eligibility. The nonsite localities, which represent isolated prehistoric or historic finds, are by definition ineligible for inclusion in the NRHP and no further work is recommended for them. |
