The quality of the pantograph voltage is important for railway traction load. The nonlinear drive system of the locomotives itself distorts the line voltage. This can affect the performance of other locomotives connected to the same feeder. So it is inevitable that proper compensation should be provided to improve overall system efficiency. This paper aims at discussing the use of a Waveshaper based Modular Multilevel Converter (W-MMC) based STATCOM to improve the power quality of a single phase locomotive feeder by providing reactive power support and harmonic current compensation. The W-MMC based STATCOM uses less number of switching devices compared to a Cascaded H-Bridge Converter (CHBC) based STATCOM. The converter is simulated in PSACD/EMTDC software and the results show its effectiveness as a STATCOM. The converter generates lower order harmonics which may cause resonance with the existing passive filters in the network. A flux error compensation based method is proposed for the reduction of lower order harmonics. The proposed compensation method is also verified through simulation in PSCAD. |
