Popis: A double cycle polarization technique is described which provides important corrosion parameters such as pitting potential and protection potential. The parameters are assessed by comparison with open circuit potentials and gravimetric studies from longer term immersion tests. Corrosion in de-aerated NaCl solution of aluminium alloys reinforced with alumina, silicon carbide and carbon is studied. Second phases, often at the fibre-matrix interface, generally result in preferential attack. This dominates the corrosion behaviour of the composite with reinforcements playing a secondary role, for example, by acting as relatively inert physical barriers to corrosion pit propagation or by modifying matrix microstructure.
