Dose distributions in radiation therapy may be optimized by a system allowing maximum flexibility in beam orientation and shaping during treatment. Computer control technology is well suited to be applied to the operation of such a complex clinical therapy machine. A linear accelerator, modified to allow control of twelve parameters by a computer has been installed. Closed loop servo systems are used to control velocity as well as position of the twelve parameters. The associated control software is implemented on a computer with 32K words of memory. Communication between the computer and the therapy machine is in ASCII format via serial lines. The evaluation of the performance of the system shows good tracking accuracy. It is concluded that computer-controlled therapy can satisfy clinical requirements on precision, versatility and safety. |
