Plasma display panels PDPs utilize pulse-number modulation method to realize gradation display. The method usually gives rise to false contour distortion when moving picture is reproduced. To solve the problem, it's common to increase the number of sub-fields and to optimize the value of weight for each sub-field. However, with increasing the number of sub-fields, the percentage of sustain period occupied in a TV-field decreases, thus the maximum available brightness of image reproduced decreases. We proposed a new method to reduce dynamic false contour without increasing the number of sub-fields. A TV-field is divided into a dither-gradation sub-field, an interpolative-gradation sub-field and several main-gradation sub-fields. In each TV field, light-emitting sub-fields are successively arranged almost from the beginning of the TV field. Thus dynamic false contour can be substantially suppressed. Moreover, the number of sub-fields is not increased due to introduction of a dither-gradation sub-field and an interpolative-gradation sub-field. As compared with the CLEAR method, only approximately half the number of sub-fields is needed to obtain the same gradations display. Therefore the peak brightness is kept high. |
