Popis:	Summary The present study briefly deals with the ecological factors of the island of Crete, i.e. its geology, soils, climate and vegetation with particular reference to the endemic species Zelkova abelicea (Lam.) Boiss. Its distribution and participation in communities in the island are described in this way. Finally, protection of this species and its cultivation in Greece is proposed, the first because it has reached the verge of extinction, and the second because its value as a garden tree is important.
