Popis: Computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) is fast moving from concept to technology. Of the three words that make this /lsumbrella’ acronym over all computer-aided activities of manufacturing, computer is probably the most important. This paper describes the recent advances in computer technology, specifically the hardware, and how these are likely to affect the progress of computer-intergrated manufacturing. Also included in brief are the fundamentals of computer technology to enable classical manufacturing engineers and technologists appreciate what is contained in the various ‘blackboxes’ (computers) entering the shop floor in an ever increasing number, and how this will affect the art and science of manufacturing.
