Five hundred and thirty-one urine specimens were tested for the presence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) by conventional virus isolation (CVI) and early-antigen immunoperoxidase test (EAIPT) in 18-h cultures. After the exclusion of 44 uninterpretable results, concordant results were noted in 466 specimens out of 487 (95·7%) (421 negative (86·4%) and 45 positive (9·2%); five (1·0%) specimens were positive by CVI and negative by EAIPT and 16 (3·3%) gave the opposite pattern. As compared to CVI, EAIPT was 96·3% specific and 90·0% sensitive. When reviewing all the 531 specimens, 51 were positive by CVI and 74 by EAIPT (P 17 44 for EAIPT and 28 44 for CVI). Thus, EAIPT can be proposed as a more rapid and sensitive alternative to CVI for the detection of CMV in urine specimens. |
