Popis: This article reports the results of a pilot study designed to test the effects of replacing the label ‘learning disability’ with ‘intellectual disability’ on lay people’s attitudes. In a web administered survey, in which the label was randomly varied, an unrepresentative convenience sample of 172 British citizens completed measures of attitudes, causal beliefs and social distance. Only a few small differences were found as a result of label manipulation. We suggest that these differences may be due to the label intellectual disability being largely unfamiliar to lay people in the UK. Nonetheless the possible small negative effects of a change to the label ‘intellectual disability’ observed in this study merit further investigation.
