Aeroassisted orbital maneuvering of a tethered satellite system is investigated using a high-frequency dissipative time-stepping algorithm. A system consisting of an atmospheric probe connected to an orbiter by an elastic tether is modeled. The interaction of the Martian atmosphere with the tethered system facilitates aerobraking, aerocapture, and aerogravity assist maneuvers. A dissipative timestepping scheme, derived from the generalized-alpha method, predicts the highly non-linear dynamics of the flexible system. Aerogravity assist and aerobraking maneuvers are successfully demonstrated for an elastic tethered system and the implemented modeling technique is shown to compare well with an alternative approach. |
