In a post-Newtonian approximation scheme in general relativity, an inhomogeneous metric is constructed for the non-linear regime. After spatially averaging, the universe is nearly homogeneous and isotropic. For simple solutions of the local Newtonian equations, it is shown that the expansion in the direction where structure preferentially forms is less rapid than the average expansion. The resulting anisotropy of the CMBR depends strongly on the time at which perturbations get non-linear. A special model is constructed in which the observed dipole component may be due to large-scale inhomogeneities. |
