Popis: Amongst the various processes in the manufacturing of any product, metal cutting operations play a vital role. Hence, cutting tools are developed with an intention to improve productivity without compromising finishing quality of the product. Various heat treatment processes have emerged over a period for hardening of cutting tools. Substantial research has been done on High Speed Steels (HSS) used for tools. Cryogenic treatment which is deep subzero working on the tool has been considered for extending the tool life. The austenite being unstable such low temperature, the whole phase transforms into martensite. Besides this, precipitation of fine carbides and refinement of carbide particles in the microstructure has been also viewed as contributing factor. In this work performance of non-cryo and cryo treated HSS M2 type tool is evaluated for same experimental conditions. It was found that tool wear reduced by 20.93% and surface finish of workpiece improved by 40.07% for cryogenic treated HSS M2 tool.
