SUMMARY In conclusion, the patterns of response that describe exercise performance in severe cardiac and severe lung disease have been discussed (Table 1). Clearly, there is a continuum of change between the normal and the severely affected individual. In general, ventilatory capacity limitation is the feature that most clearly defines individuals with lung disease. The absence of such limitation, together with features suggesting a cardiovascular limitation such as an early anaerobic threshold, most clearly defines patients with heart disease. Again, it should be emphasized that these are not good diagnostic tests, but tests in which the effects of cardiac and pulmonary disease can be assessed and normal responses defined. |
