Popis: Cancer is one of the most dangerous diseases in present times. Biological processes that lead to growth and spread of cancer occur at nanoscale level. Nanotechnology provides a novel approach in diagnosing and treatment of cancers. The main mission of nanotechnology in this field is tumor targeting, which enables differentiation between malignant and healthy cells, through passive and active targeting. Early detection of cancer is crucial for the adequate treatment of patients. Application of nanotechnology enables more precise and accurate diagnosis and continuous monitoring of the disease. The principle of nanoparticles as diagnostic tools is that they capture specific cancer biomarkers. In addition to standard imaging techniques (MRI) and computed tomography (CT), nanotechnology also enables development of novel imaging: PAT, Raman and multimodal imaging. Current therapeutic methods for fighting cancer are limited to chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Application of nanotechnology offers advancements of current therapies with targeted drug delivery and therapy with less cytotoxicity for healthy cells. Few different types of anticancer therapies can be improved by including nanoparticles (NPs). Even though nanotechnology helps detect cancer at a very early stage and helps to monitor the disease with much greater precision than using standard methods, its potential toxicity should be fully investigated. This is done through both passive and active targeting. This review focuses on applications of nanoparticles in fighting cancer.
