Residential houses are generally vulnerable to earthquakes. On May 27, 2006, an earthquake of magnitude M6.3 hit the Special Province of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Due to the 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake, thousands of houses were damaged. More than 200000 houses were estimated to be heavily damaged and collapse. Those damages are mainly because of the residential houses in Indonesia were usually built by the workers who have no or limited capability on earthquake-resistant design. After the earthquake, the government intended to start the reconstruction quickly. The government implemented the policy that the community groups should do the majority of rehabilitation and construction processes to speed up the recovery time. This policy has speeded up the recovery time after the earthquake. However, due to massive construction activities and less construction experience, the results of construction have to be assured to the requirement of earthquake-resistant buildings standard. The survey has been conducted to the built house in Special Province of Yogyakarta and Central Java, to ensure the compliance of the houses to the guidelines for earthquake resistant structures. A data collection form was prepared to evaluate the reconstructed houses. The survey showed that the houses in the Special Province of Yogyakarta have better fulfillment compared to the ones in Central Java. |
