Popis: | Due to the presence of noise, the magnitude of a magnetic field determined directly from three orthogonal field measurements is always a positively biased estimate of the true field magnitude. This bias is also more pronounced at low signal-to-noise levels. Statistical estimators to help reduce the effect of this bias are discussed and investigated, namely the mean, median, most probable and maximum likelihood estimators. The problem of ascribing precise confidence levels to a field strength determination is also discussed, with particular emphasis on conditions of low signal-to-noise ratios. |
