The paper presents an overview of the findings of several studies of families of children with mild to severe mental handicaps. Using a qualitative methodology, parent volunteers were asked to describe what it has been like parenting a child with a handicap, and were allowed to tell their own story with minimal direction or probing. All interviews were tape-recorded and parents were assured of confidentiality. Data were analyzed in terms of the dominant themes related to parent concerns; central concerns in education and daily living are presented and comparisons made of common and unique themes related to severity of the handicapping conditions. |
