This research project deals with the analysis and comparison of delivery strategies used by courier/express/parcel (CEP) companies. The focus is set on transport impact in the city of Frankfurt, Germany. In the first step, on one hand, interviews with managers and drivers of the CEP service providers were conducted; on the other hand, 40 delivery tours were attended. A cluster was mapped in the second part. It considers the relevant aspects of delivery processes in cities based on city districts. Authors identified new strategies in particular city districts. The analysis of downtown and mixed-use area districts indicates that vehicles are mostly used as depots. Drivers walked instead of driving their car. Because parking pressure is immense, distances in between the customers are low and the amount of one-way streets is huge, and a two-stage delivery strategy in downtown and mixed-use areas is recommended. A microdepot in combination with electric cargo bicycles should conduct that delivery strategy. |
