Popis: We have described the interaction between Staphylococcus aureus and human heart valve organ cultures. These results indicated that there was an initial damage to the valve endothelium which preceded the attachment of staphylococci to the surface of the heart valves. Attachment of microorganisms and the ensuing destruction of the endothelium is a progressive event and can be correlated quantitatively with increasing numbers of bacteria recovered from infected heart valves. It appears that the damage to the endothelium allows colonization of both the remaining endothelial cell layer as well as the subendothelial matrix. Parallel studies using heart valves from mechanically induced rabbit endocarditis in comparison with staphylococcal infected heart valve organ cultures showed similar attachment and damage.
