Popis: Earliest orogenic movements in the Late Cretaceous (Gidon et al., 1974) are related to the obduction of radiolaritic-ophiolitic oceanic slices together with distal parts of the Arabian margin. This compressional deformation phase is observed along the entire length of the Arabian passive margin (Ricou et al., 1977; Ravaut et al., 1997; Agard et al., 2005) (Figure 1). In NW Kurdistan (NW Zagros), the Late Cretaceous compression inverted the Neotethys rift-structure by forming folds and thrust, and was associated with the formation of a foreland basin. Initially calcareous deepmarine sediments (Shiranish Formation) have been deposited in the Zagros foreland basin. With the further progression of the mountain front the deep marine carbonates were replaced by detrital sequences, the Flysch of the Kolosh and subsequent the Molass like Gercus formation. The detrital units strongly vary in thickness and cover the Early Cretaceous inversion of the Neotethys rift.
