Popis: The total electron content (TEC) in a unit column of space plasma is considered as an independent geophysical characteristic of the environment at middle latitudes. An approximate expression for the TEC in terms of the environment microcharacteristics can be obtained by integrating the approximate solutions to a continuity equation for the F2 region and the adjacent top-side ionosphere. It is also shown that the appropriate equation for the TEC can be derived by integrating the continuity equation over height. Thus, modeling the TEC features is not a particular problem. Unfortunately, the usage of such models requires some information on the parameters of the height profiles of the plasma microcharacteristics, which may actually be unavailable. Therefore, of considerable methodological and applied importance is the development of the TEC phenomenological model (in the multiplicative and additive versions), whose input parameter is the critical frequency of the F2 region of the midlatitude ionosphere.
