Introduction: Obesity in children and adolescents is a public health problem and is related to a higher risk of developing hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Studies suggest that learning socioemotional skills may be an interesting strategy for addressing this problem. Objective: To summarize the evidence on the scope of the relationship between learning socioemotional skills and obesity prevention in children and adolescents. Materials and methods: This is a scoping review, in which studies published in peer-reviewed journals, as well as theses and dissertations, were considered. The search was conducted in the following databases: Pubmed/Medline, Web of Science, Scopus, Scielo, Psycinfo and the Brazilian Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD). The synthesis of the results was descriptive. Results: 13 studies were included, distributed among 10 articles, two dissertations and one thesis. The results were organized into three categories: social competence, social skills and obesity; self-control and obesity; and self-compassion, mindfulness and obesity. Conclusion: Learning socioemotional skills is an important strategy that contributes to the prevention of obesity in children and adolescents, especially in relation to social skills, especially self-control. |
