This experiment, conducted in eight countries, finds that women are accepted by young adults as capable leaders in a broader set of conditions than expected based on predictions in literatures about exposure to women in government, role congruity theory, and theory of in-groups. Political party has a larger effect on leadership evaluations than candidate gender. The incongruity cost, or riskiness of women candidates, appears low for young adults, in diverse settings. Yet challenges remain for women politicians when defense is a major policy focus. Other challenges also still are present such as insufficient campaign financing, intimidation and violence, and lack of support from party elites. The struggle for women in politics continues, but this evidence that young adults’ leadership templates include women across a range of posts and policy areas provides hope for a gender-equal future. |
