Popis: | In Europe during the Renaissance and Baroque periods it was quite fashionable to construct grottos in parks and gardens, or to decorate halls with decorative clements from nature to make them look like a grotto. In Berlin and Brandenburg several grottos were built in the electoral and royal parks and gardens, including the Grottensaal in the pleasance of Berlin (1650-1730), four grottos in the pleasance of Oranienburg (1651-90), the Neptungrotto in the Park of Sanssouci, Potsdam (constructed 1751-57 and still in existence) and the Feldsteingrotto in the park of Rheinsberg (constructed 1753, reconstructed 1981). Our study focuses on two more grottos. Both monuments are still intact and can be partly visited |
