We present a calculation of the macroscopic contribution to the dipole moment of a deformed (axially symmetric but reflection asymmetric) nucleus, using the droplet model. In addition to the familiar charge redistribution effect (which is worked out including a correction for the relative neutron excess (N - Z)/ A and a second correction, of relative order A − 1 3 , the droplet model predicts a contribution from the presence of a neutron skin. This contribution turns out to be of the same order as the redistribution effect and of opposite sign. The result is a reduction of the macroscopic contribution to the dipole moment to small or even negative values, as compared with earlier estimates. All the formulae are worked out for a nuclear shape specified by an arbitrary number of Legendre polynomials. |
