Popis: The 24-hour recall household survey method was used to gather data on breast feeding indicators from two rural villages and two urban communities of West Bengal India. Exclusive breast-feeding rates were very low in both areas (9.8% in urban and 12.5% in rural areas) but most of the infants less than four months old were predominantly breast fed. Complementary feeding was introduced in a timely fashion in 61.5% of urban cases and only 18.7% of rural cases. While continuation rates of two years were reported in 31.5% of urban cases and 62% of rural cases the bottle-feeding rate was 56.8% and 35.5% respectively. These data should provide important comparison statistics and act as a basis for evaluation of the progress of promotional activities.
